Petrol Heads

Buffleheads congregate in the local bays and inlets during the fall and winter here. Their almost cartoonish proportions and wonderful colours make them a favourite of mine.

These small wading birds seem to be able to pull off a magic trick as they feed amongst the pebbles and rocks, following the receding tide. They scurry amongst the rocks with energy and determination and then stop - and vanish so good is their camouflage. Now you see me...

These colourful and characterful fast water ducks are under threat in my old haunts in the Kootenay region of British Columbia due to nest sight disturbance, but I was lucky enough to find a pair not far from my home.
