When I was young I don't think there was a single animal I so badly wanted to see in the wild more than an otter. Sadly in those days in the UK they were very few and far between. Thankfully of late they are staging something of a comeback in British waterways.
I had to wait until I moved to Canada to see my first wild otter, and since then count myself blessed to have had a number of encounters with them in the wild. Probably one of my all time wildlife highlights was spending an hour sat quietly watching (and snapping the odd reference photo here and there) a mother otter and three near full grown pups feeding on a fall bonanza of bullhead catfish.
They are incredibly likeable creatures, and I enjoyed exploring their world from another perspective while illustrating Artie Knapp's story "Little Otter Learns to Swim". If you'd like to know more about that project, please check out my page about illustration.
